Greens Candidate David Allison Vows To Fight to See Local Shops Built On Prince Henry Site

Will the Prince Henry redevelopments live up to Landcoms' promised "Village Vision" with its own on-site shops catering to local residents?

Or will it just become a concentration of residential dwellings requiring long shopping trips to EastGardens as some fear?

The issue has crystallised with the recent decision by Council to refuse an application for a mixed residential retail development at the corner of Anzac Parade and Pine Avenue because of its excessive bulk and scale.

The application proposes 840 square meters of retail space.

Greens Council candidate David Allison says local residents have approached the Greens seeking assurances that Council will insist that the promised shopping village will materialise.

He promised this week today every thing that he could to "ensure that the promised village vision for the Prince Henry redevelopment is adhered to and that as part of this that local shops are provided".

He further elaborated,

"Council's Green Councillors have brought the issue on the agenda of next week's Environment Committee meeting. I assure residents that if elected to South Ward I will do every thing I can to ensure that the shops do indeed materialise on the Prince Henry site.

I do not want the applicants now coming back to Council and suggesting that any of the proposed retail area be sacrificed to allow more residential area now that the Council has said no to the overall excessive  bulk and scale of proposal. That's not on."

The Greens argue that incorporating local shopping facilities into large new development sites aid in reducing "ecological foot print" of such projects.

Mr Allison commented further,

"Local politicians have an obligation to carefully consider the long term ecological contributions of specific development projects as more information comes to light about global climate change effects."

Greens Deputy Mayor Murray Matson said,

"There are many positive environmental initiatives being incorporated into the Prince Henry site which next week's Environment Committee will assess. But the Greens would not want to see the local shopping facility proposal abandoned as it would be ecologically backward step."
