Randwick City Council has moved to establish a rebuilding project for a community in Aceh. RCC will develop a framework for implementation of a community project, in conjunction with the Indonesian Consulate and members of the local Indonesian community.

The Mayor Cr Murray Matson, Deputy Mayor Bruce Notley-Smith and Cr Bradley Hughes (Chair of Council’s Multicultural Advisory Committee), along with the General Manager and other senior staff, met with the Indonesian Consul General Mr Wardana to discuss possibilities for the types of projects and to request a list of communities for whom a project could be undertaken.

The intention is to establish a fund for collection of donations towards a specific rebuilding project, such as a community centre, medical facility or school for a community in need in Aceh.

Rather than contributing directly, from its own finances, Council will provide governance, management and technical expertise for the implementation of the project.

The Indonesian Consul General expressed his appreciation for RCC’s support in hosting a fundraising event for Tsunami relief in Aceh last Sunday 9th January.

The event was a great success, raising over $10,000 in donations and the Consul General said it provided Indonesian community members with much encouragement to continue with further fundraising and relief assistance projects on an ongoing basis.
