Greens Protest Council Dropping of Conservation Zones

 home

Randwick City Council has completely abandoned months of work undertaken in preparing an extensive series of proposed heritage Conservation Zones across the Council area.

Greens Councillor Margaret Woodsmith states that the Greens are "appalled" that Liberal and Labor Councillors combined to vote down the staff recommendation after heavy lobbying.

Cr Woodsmith said that it was an over reaction by the Councillors to dump the entire scheme and that it could have been made to work by the dropping of the more contentious streets.

She said,

"I have received calls after the meeting from some of my constituents in Randwick and Clovelly expressing their regret that it did not pass as they were in favour of the conservation proposals. I do feel that the Liberal and Labor Councillors over reacted and threw the baby out with the bath water. The Greens were willing to accept amendments to make it work."
