Randwick Green Mayor Notes Reception Of Feedback On Parking Meter Proposal

home

Greens Mayor Murray Matson has responded to concerns expressed over the weekend by Randwick's' Chambers of Commerce about his call for more parking meters in Randwick.

Mayor Matson responded to the Chambers by saying on Sunday night,

"The parking meter proposal is necessary to allow Council to make up the $4million annual shortfall in the spending necessary merely to hold our decaying infrastructure at a static level.

"I'm sure that the business community of Randwick will appreciate the need to hold the municipality's roads and drains together.

"We can not go on for ever ignoring this growing need which has reached a backlog of $116 million of unperformed maintenance work. To do so would be a utter irresponsibility on my behalf."

The Mayor has also used his Mayoral Column to assure key business, sporting and community stake holders that the final structure, extent and impact of the proposal has yet to be decided on by Council.

He stated in the column,

"I have received valuable feedback from residents and community groups about the idea of installing more parking meters in the City.

"Any decision about parking meters will be made by Council and I would like to assure residents that their suggestions will be evaluated and that unnecessary inconvenience for key stakeholders will be minimized in assessing the options."

He summed his position up stating on Sunday,

"For revenue reasons I believe that Randwick has to have an extended parking meter scheme.

"But it will be built on our existing policy of establishing resident preferred parking schemes in order to protect residents parking rights.

"Further, there is as yet no decision on how other key stake holders such as business, community and sporting interests will be effected."
