It's official. A baby boom like none before.
The growing numbers of children in our community are evident in the beach coverage at nippers each Sunday morning. But the infrastructure for children is sadly neglected.
Our primary schools are overflowing with demountables taking up the playground space. Labor and the Liberals closed four eastern suburbs high schools selling off the land. Schools now need to use the public parks for playgrounds, putting extra pressure on all available open space.
Some hard thinking needs to be done about how we cater for a population that is growing from the bottom. A good start would be for our dedicated football oval, Coogee Oval, to offer its facilities to juniors.
They could easily train in this dedicated space without disrupting the main game. Surely there's no need for a squabble between the codes on this one.
