Coogee Based Greens and Wilderness Society Working Together to Raise Environment Issues of State Significance

 home

The Wilderness Society and the Greens election team contesting the seat of Coogee have jointly committed themselves to securing good environmental outcomes in the NSW state election.

"The Greens are very concerned that environmental issues of state significance are being ignored. These include woodchipping and land clearing across NSW. An emerging area of specific concern is the vulnerability of state forests both in the west and along the Great Dividing Range," said local Councillor Murray Matson, the Greens Candidate for Coogee.

The Wilderness Society sees the Coogee contest as an opportunity to pin down the Labor and Liberal candidates on where they stand on land clearing and wood chipping.

"We’re pleased to be working with the Greens in Coogee. With Ernie Page now retiring there is an opportunity for both the Labor and Liberal parties to show that they have worthwhile polices on forest and land clearing to match those of the Greens," said Felicity Wade, Wilderness Society campaigner.

Cr Matson says that he will ensure that land clearing and forest issues are given priority in his campaign for Coogee.

"The local Greens will work with the Wilderness Society to make sure that protecting old-growth forests and controlling land clearing are key facets of our election campaign against the two conservative parties, that is the Labor and Liberal parties."

"Stopping the destruction of ecosystems and halting the devastating reduction in biodiversity are incredibly important for the good of NSW generally.

"We will also be campaigning strongly on more local issues, such as, our campaigns to end developer donations to political parties, bringing back light rail, and restoring the public health and education systems,"

"Cunningham and the Victorian election show that voters believe that the Greens are a genuine alternative. Our support is so high because of the way the Labor and Liberal parties have ignored voters in favour of their cronies in the development and forestry industries." Cr Matson said.

"We look forward to working with the Greens in the coming months to raise awareness in the Coogee electorate of these key environmental challenges." said Wade.
