Red River Gums: Randwick City Greens Happy Over South-Western Forest Win

home

Randwick City Greens Councillors have welcomed news that the Keneally government will act to protect River Red Gums in south-western NSW.

Greens Councillor Murray Matson caused heated debate earlier this year when he moved that the Council echo a call by former Premier Bob Carr for the protection of the gums.

He said after hearing the news this week,

“I congratulate Bob Carr and the Society for their proactive defence of the NSW environment and thank my fellow Councillors and specifically Cr Woodsmith for agreeing to support my Council motion. I salute the Premier for responding so positively to her own local Council on this issue. I also thank local resident Stephanie Poleson who spoke at the Council meeting in support of the motion.”

The resolution to the Greens motion reads as follows.

RESOLUTION: (Matson/Woodsmith) that Council:

(a) resolves to support local resident Mr Bob Carr’s call for a national protest against the NSW Labor Government’s proposal to allow logging of the ... River Red Gums, in southwest NSW, until 2015;

(b) write to local MP’s noting Council’s support for Mr Carr’s protest call; and

(c) invite Premier Ms Kristina Keneally, in her capacity as a local MP, to write to Council clarifying the State Government’s logging schedule and how this State policy will benefit her local residents as NSW citizens, paying particular attention to the issue of the Murray River Red Gums.”
