Re: Councillor Charles Mathews and "Call to ban parking meters" 19-5-2010

The irony of the No Parking Meters Party is that it was launched in Randwick City Council, an LGA that does not have a significant number of parking meters apart from a small number at Coogee beach.

In an earlier political incarnation Cr Charles Matthews originally supported the installation of these meters. But that was before he got voted off Council in 2004 and found that he needed a new poltical party to re-brand himself with.

Matthews was thus off Council during the latter big debate of 2005 in which the then Green , Labor and Liberal Councillors unanimously voted to abandon a proposed expansion of parking meters.

The Councillors of the day, myself included, listened to the will of the people. It was actually my mayoral minute that recommended dropping the idea. The debate was all over by the time Matthews got his No Parking Meters Party rolling.
