Greens After Extra Street Tree Plantings in Council Budget

The Greens say that Randwick Council needs to maintain its image as a "Green" Council by increasing the number of tree plantings proposed under this year's draft budget.

The Greens have already lobbied to boost the number of plantings from an initially planned 1,000 to approximately 1,915 trees ヨ but this will still be less than the more than 3,000 planted last year.

Greens Councillor Margaret Woodsmith stated that the extra money so far gained by The Greens will include maintenance for a period of sixmonths.

She elaborated,

“The Greens did not think 1,000 trees was enough for the Council to be planting this year given the growing public awareness of greenhouse gas and climate change issues. We will be consulting with Council's Greening Randwick Committee on the list of streets selected.”

Former Greens Councillor and dedicated bush care worker Judy Greenwood has called for the number of plantings to be increased yet further to match last year's effort.

She said,

“The local Greens will be putting in a written submission urging that the draft budget be amended to increase the number of plantings to at least 3,000.”

The draft budget, which Council voted this week to put on public exhibition, currently proposes specific plantings in the following streets.
