Council to Seek Reconciliation of Swim Clubs
home
Randwick City Councillors will decide in the new-year as to whether more than one local swimming Club will be based in the Des Renford Aquatic Center.
Traditionally only the 40 year old "Maroubra Swim Club" has been recognised as the pool's home club, but late last year a second club, "Bayside", was formed.
Bayside has bookings at the pool for its activities next year but technically these are prohibited under a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the Council that gives Maroubra Swim Club exclusive use.
Mayor Murray Matson states that,
"I have tried to resolve the issue several times this year but backed off each time when other Councillors asked me to do so to allow a hoped for reconciliation of the two clubs. Unfortunately this has not yet happened and time is running out. Bayside has bookings that will need to be either confirmed or cancelled."
The Mayor stated that this week that he had talked to representatives of both the Labor and Liberal Councillors but insufficient time remained to debate a resolution prior to the Christmas break.
He elaborated,
"I've talked to both the Deputy Mayor on behalf of the Liberals and Councillor Daley from Labor. The problem is that there is no formal meeting scheduled until February."
As an interim measure, the Mayor will write to both clubs to advise them that Bayside had been granted permission to use DRAC for one term.
He states that he expects that the Councillors will come to a permanent resolution of the matter at their first meeting in February.
