Kingsford Legal Center, Meals on Wheels, and Rotary Run Markets

Under Threat if Council Sells Kingsford Markets site

The Greens reacted angrily at last Tuesday night's Randwick City Council meeting when it was revealed that the Kingsford Legal Service has not been warned that the Council wants to sell the Kingsford Markets site.

If sold, the Legal Center, a greengrocer and the local Meals on Wheels service would have to find other premises.

The Randwick and Maroubra Rotary Clubs would also lose the revenue from being able to hold the markets every Sunday.

Greens Councillor Murray Matson stated that he had rung the Legal Service prior to Tuesday night's debate of a Council report to check that they were aware of the proposal.

He said later,

"My worst fears were realised when I learnt that the Kingsford Legal Centre seemed to have no knowledge that Council was trying to arrange the rezoning of the site for a possible sale."

The Center provides free legal advice to 4,000 low income clients a year and is the only service of its' kind in the eastern suburbs. It has previously won a "Best Community Services Award" from the Council.
