Street Tree Battle on Randwick Council

 home

The Greens have failed to sway Acting Mayor Michael Daley towards reviewing Randwick Council's contentious policy of removing 2000 "aggressively rooted" street trees over the next ten years.

The Greens had wanted to extend the removal period to lessen the impact of the removals.

Greens Councillor Murray Matson said after his motion failed to get either Labor or Liberal support at Tuesday (28-1-0-03) night's meeting that,

"The Greens believe that removing 2000 very big street trees over such a short time frame will have too much of an impact on the environment of Randwick - it will be like cutting down a small forest.

We don't believe that there will be sufficient time for replacement trees to generate the same extensive canopy effect currently enjoyed by streets such as, George, Abbot, and Quail.

There are also many other streets were a majority of residents value particularly large and well established trees."
