Local residents are asking why their federal member Peter Garrett has left it dangerously late to what might be the dying weeks of his government to promise to save Malabar Headland.
Greens candidate Lindsay Shurey says that "... there does not seem to be much time before polling day for this last minute election promise to be carried out. Why has Garrett waited three years to play this card now?”
The Greens are calling on the Liberal Candidate for Kingsford Smith to promise that Tony Abbott will carrying out Garrett's promise should he win government in three weeks time.
Ms Shurey said,
"If Garrett has botched up the timing on this then someone should be asking the Liberals whether they are going to honour his promise.
Otherwise we are back to square one should Julia Gillard lose government on Saturday the 21st August."
The Greens are questioning Garrett's ability to deliver on Malabar Headland by pointing to his recent failure to provide a promised $1.8 million to fund the maintenance of a new Environment park up in south Randwick.
Ms Shurey says that the money was committed to in a deed of agreement signed between the Department of Defence and Randwick City Council but Garrett has ignored Council calls to intervene.
She said,
"If Peter Garrett can't deliver on a promised $1.8 million to Randwick City Council for the new Environment Park at Bundock street how much credibility is now in his much greater promise on the Malabar Headland?”
Peter Garrett and Julia Gillard lost in a media scrum at Marourba Beach as they promise the saving of Malabar Headland, 1st August, 2010.
