"Road Kill" Demo At Eastern Distributor Site
Venue: 7.00 Am This Morning, Cnr Arthur Street & South Dowling Street, (Opposite West Side Of Moore Park)
Rush hour traffic this morning along the route of the planned Eastern Distributor tollway will encounter a graphic reminder of the cost of large road systems.
The pro public transport group LinkUp plans to make it very clear to commuters the number of injuries and deaths that Australians endure because of excessive road building.
LinkUp has been disrupting work on the Eastern Distributor through direct civil disobedience for several weeks now.
A LinkuP spokesperson stated this morning,
"We plan to make a forceful presentation of the price our government and the RTA is asking Sydney to bear when they build these large costly road projects and ignore the public transport option."
"Commuters may find the subject matter off putting but these deaths have and will occur again. If we don’t wont them we shouldn’t be building more and more motorways at the expense of public transport."
"The cost of car based transport is frightening. Some 2,000 Australians die on the roads each year and 90,000 suffer at least minor injuries. Another 800 suffer premature deaths from air pollution. Car emissions account for 75% of air pollution."
